Gus Gill, MD, Chairman, Department of Otolayngology, 1978-2005

                       Gus Gill, MD   (1939-2015)

Dr. Gill graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1969.

From the time that Dr.Gill became department chair until his retirement in July 2005, he was the only African American Chair of an Otolaryngology Department in the United States.

In addition to his 27-year tenure as department chair, he served at various points, President of the Faculty Council, President of the University’s Academic Senate, and Director of the International Health Institute.

In 1978, Dr. Gill visited Washington, D.C. and met with the Congressional Black Caucus. Below is his report written for the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate School newspaper, Life Times.
